about
“Songbird” was in a sense the jumpstart for this album and burgeoning musical career. I had been engaged to a man that I had spent the last seven years with. When he left, though it was very painful, I felt like I had made a pivotal choice in my life not to settle.
I create more prolifically in solitude with a lot of space around me, psychic and otherwise, with the time to really get into my own cadence and to chase any rabbit hole I fancy. I had almost a year to do so. I was laying in bed at night, listening to the rain fall, and I got a tune in my head.
I happened to turn on the recorder on my phone and just sang in a stream of consciousness a lot of bottled up emotions. I had chosen not to settle in love, and it was to be the same in life in general--even if it meant taking harder, scarier roads. Pronouncing to myself even in a quiet room with no one else around that I was going to “sing all my life” was the first step towards owning myself, my desires and goals, my talents, fully.
lyrics
Said I’s gonna sing a song for myself, but here I go writing again
Singing in front of folks I don’t know when all i want to do is sing within
Here in my room and here in the night with nobody but myself
snug as a sparrow, feathered in down, warm up in my nest.
My mama she told me that i used to sing like a songbird in the night
rain on the tin roof, making up tunes, oh half the night
Oh, all grown up, oh who I am
Oh all grown up, oh ohhh my my my
I’ve been walking for days and walking for nights walking towards who I am
I’ve been walking since I was a young young girl
And I’ll be walking until i’m dead
I don’t need no longing into my life to take me away from my cause
Oh the cause of my days the cause of my ways
The cause behind the cause
Oh so sing little songbird sing a song so bright
Ohhhhhh I’ll sing all night long, oh i’ll sing all my life
The rain on the tin roof is beating real soft and im here quiet and still,
i've got everything i need in my own little heart i'm happy free and well
A smile on my lips to remind me that there is something deep inside
that can’t be capitalized on oh with anybody’s lies
I don’t need no man to come into my life and tell me how i've got to be
I just want to sing my yodeling songbird song oh for little old me
I do need to learn to lean into my life and walk up to who I am
a woman who sings, a woman who rains, a woman who loves her own song
Oh so sing little songbird, sing a song so bright
Ohhhhhh I’ll sing all night long, oh i’ll sing all my life
In 5 billion years, the sun will explode and life will cease
to exist, this’ll be a cold dead rock just a spinning around
its own axis, this’ll be a cold dead rock just a spinning
around its own axis.
Oh, all I want is to be alive, oh and all i want i've got My my my
Oh so sing little songbird sing a song so bright, Ohhhhhh
I’ll sing all night long, oh i’ll sing, all my life
